With costs rising of electricity oil & natural gas, this is a concern for nearly every homeowner. Whether you are planning on staying in your home for one month, one year or even one or two decades, with energy conservation, your savings will begin to pile up immediately. Saving on heating costs, air conditioning costs and electricity costs are all possible, and there are plenty of ways to help you save money!Related posts:

How To Lower Utility Bills And Save Money

Create A Greener Home And Start Saving On All Utility Costs

Inexpensive Energy Conserving Products and Technologies – 3 Low Cost Ways to Lower Your Utility Bills

By: Joe Ficalora

“Our Utility Costs are too high!”

That’s what I said back in 2005, when I took a hard look at our finances and knew something had to change if we were to save any money that year. We had lived in our home for 4 years, and it was new when we purchased it, so I originally thought that it was surely very energy efficient. Well that was partly true, but we weren’t that energy efficient. And it wasn’t long until I found out that plenty could still be done to save on our electricity costs, and our heating and air conditioning costs too. We set out to save 10% and exceeded that target.

If you are like me, when you walk through the door after work, you want to spend some time with family, have dinner, perhaps relax a bit and settle into whatever evening routines you normally do with your kids, significant other or pets. Energy conservation and consumption planning isn’t foremost on your mind when you arrive home. But bills do tend to cross our minds at least once or twice a month. Especially when there is too much month left at the end of the money!

I had spent very little time thinking about how much we actually spent on utility bills. Then one Winter Saturday, after our dog Runner had just finished running around the house with his favorite toy, I saw him lie down in the sun coming in through a window. I knew both he and our cats always would pick the same places around the house at various times to nap in the sun, depending on the time of day. I began wondering just how much heat came in through the windows. As a Physicist, I thought, “well I should be able to figure that out”. After a little time spent with some books open, and a little more time on the Internet, I figured out it was about 800 watts for any south-facing window! Now that’s a large amount of heat, and we had six windows facing south in our house.

After that realization my mind began to churn through the implications of this revelation. We had at least a 4800 watt heating unit that was free on sunny days and was running all year. But we weren’t always taking advantage of it by opening the blinds on nice sunny winter days. To make matters worse, I realized that during the summer, these large “window-solar-heaters” would be heating the house while we were spending money on air conditioning trying to cool the house!

Now that I had the beginnings of an idea, and some hope that I could do something about my heating and air-conditioning costs, I began spending some serious time thinking about how far I could go towards reducing my utility costs. I did a complete and thorough accounting of just how much energy we were using in the winter months to heat the house, and in the summer months to cool the house. I accounted for every appliance in and around the house that used electricity too.

After accounting for how much we consumed, I realized that not only had our consumption or usage steadily increased, but the cost for electricity in NJ had also increased, and also the costs for natural gas. To add insult to injury, the “fees in the fine print” had also gone up too! So now I was really motivated to do something. But what to do and where to begin?

I knew from basic physics that energy cannot be created or destroyed except in rare instances. So tracking the energy we were paying for was a key place to start. I reviewed our prior 12 months of natural gas bills and electricity bills. I knew I could not do anything about the increase in utility costs for the most part. But I could take a look at our usage from previous years and see how much more energy we were using. After doing that I found that we had had an increase in energy consumption of roughly 20% over a few years. I also analyzed the consumption information, looked at all our appliances both gas and electric, and created a seasonal model of energy use for our home. The seasonal use model of electricity told me that we didn’t use much during the winter, and our biggest energy consumption was natural gas for heating the house.

So the first question I had was then why had our electricity and natural gas consumption increased? My second question was where could I gain some savings in both heat loss during the winter and heat intrusion during the summer months. After that I would tackle the electricity consumption.

Step 1 – where we were losing heat

Since it was already winter, it was relatively easy to simply walk around the house looking for cold air intruding. I found a smorgasbord of places around the house that were quite cold to the touch.

The list of cold areas I found included:

sliding glass doors, with rubber seals that leaked in cold air the basement door to the garage, which needed better seals a garage door, with torn rubber seals at the bottom and sides high-hat lights in upper floor ceilings, which were very cold a front door, having bottom seals that had cracks in them hot water pipes, which were not insulated in the basement a couple of windows, which no longer shut completely the attic stairs trap door, which had cold air streaming out of it. the clothes dryer, in particular the vent to the outside which had a missing spring on the trap door outside the fireplace glass doors, which looked nice, but were clearly cold from air leaks in the flue and the doors themselves

Most of these areas needed better sealing and insulation around them or adjustment and alignment of mating surfaces. The sealing and insulation did not cost all that much, and I left the list of affected areas out so that I could check on them each fall as winter approached. I also spent some time in the attic, seeking out areas that felt “warm” to the touch. These were areas where heat from the rooms below was leaking into the attic. Re-seating the attic insulation in most cases solved the problem, but there were a few areas where further efforts in sealing were required.

Step 2 – letting nature help

Watching the pets during a sunny winter day was also great help. Our two cats would nap in the sun and stay in an area as long as it was warm. I watched them move around the house over the course of the winter’s weekend, and you could see where the sun would warm the floor and which shades needed to be opened during winter days. I also noticed that they would sleep on the darker rugs after the sun had already moved away, indicating they were still warm. This was simple to understand, dark objects heated in the sunlight would retain more heat and re-radiate it back into the house even after the sunshine had moved on to another part of the house. This type of heating is called Passive Solar Heating. So where I could agreement from the rest of the family, a dark rug was used in a few key areas for winter. In home designs, people often place natural stone or slate floors in these areas, which become a large thermal mass to absorb the sun’s rays.

We determined as a family to look at the forecast each day and fully open the blinds on the south facing windows for fall winter and spring, except on the most dreary days.

Step 3 – consume less heat

Since we used the most natural gas in the winter, the two places that burned more of it were the home heating units, and the dryer. We decided to tackle the home heating right away, as our seasonal consumption model indicated that was clearly the largest energy consumption. After some interviewing of all who lived in the house, and using some Voice of the Customer (VOC) techniques, it was determined that the upstairs bedrooms spaces really only needed to be warm when we woke up, and could be left cool throughout most of the day except for weekends. On weekends, the heat could be turned on later in the morning when family members where not generally rushing off to work or school.

We made some adjustments to the setback thermostat programs in the upstairs and downstairs zones. We adjusted the times to heat each zone to fewer hours each workday, and we lowered the temperatures during the non-occupied hours as well. We targeted a 30% reduction in the number of hours the temperature was actually set to the warmer value. We also dropped the non-occupied temperature down to 61 Fahrenheit.

Step 4 – go further with alternative energy

We knew that saving and conserving was only half of the plan to lowering our heating costs. Using less fossil fuel would be nice as a next step. Since wood is plentiful in our area, and the cost per face cord was only $155, we next investigated replacing our fireplace with a wood burning stove. Needless to say, it made perfect sense, as firewood is a renewable resource and it was not going up at the rates that natural gas was projected to increase. Although it’s outside the scope of this article, write to me if you want the details on how this reduced our heating bills by an even greater amount than our conservation efforts!

Next up, the electric bill!

We felt that we had made some real progress with our heating bills, but larger still were the electricity costs, especially during the warmer summer months when the air conditioning units were running most often. We followed the same general approach, first accounting in detail for how much electricity we were consuming over the prior 12 months. Once again we listed how much energy we consumed and determined that over the 4 years we had lived there, that our energy consumption had increased. More disturbing than the consumption increase was the upward trend in electricity rates.

Step 1 – where we were using/wasting electricity

Now with electricity, consumption spots were a little easier to find. We went around the house, and I noted the amperage listing on each large item that was plugged into a wall outlet or wired directly to the house current. To make a fair comparison, I also made note of the frequency of use or the likely average hours “on” in a typical summer month. In engineering terms these usage times are called “duty cycles”. When I was finished, I had a list of the consumption sources to manage or improve that looked like this:

Air conditioning – 100 kwh daily Well Pump & Filtration – 19 kwh daily Refrigerator 1 – 7 kwh daily Refrigerator 2 – 5 kwh daily Dishwasher – 3.6 kwh daily Washing Machine – 0.5 kwh daily Electric Oven –
Joe Ficalora is an independent consultant and author in the areas of Solar Energy, Personal Investing, Lean Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, and Crime Statistics. This thinking comes from the medical model of houses which have designed for give up the loneliness or boredom. But the main reason of using the green house is reducing the energy cost and the better confronts and healthiness of the house. The green house mainly focus to increase the efficiency of using water, air, energy and other resources in its design. This design works on the better health condition and also the environment of the building with the maintenance cost and operation of the building for the purposes. This building is only for reducing the conflict on the building environment as well as on the owner’s health and natural condition and to do these the building designed to increase the use of water, air and other energy resources, increase the health condition of the owner and increase the output of them and reduce the pollution, ravage as well as the ecological squalor. There is a similar concept like green house is known as natural house. This natural building is for using the available natural products with a proper design and green structural design. The sustainable development concept of natural building is also vital to build a green house. The main purposes of green building are reducing functional cost by decreasing the using of energy and other resources and extending the productivity, using environmental products like using the rain water and decrease the heat island outcome. A man who works on green building design seeks to get the ecological and visual relation between the structure and the nearby natural resources. But usually you can not differ the between the sustainable buildings and the less or non-sustainable buildings.

LEED means the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED has a rating system of green building which is developed by USGBC. With this rating system any one can easily build their standard green house. You can find a course of LEED rating system. The course is handled by GBC (Green Building Certification) and any one with this certificate will allows using the acronym Accredited Professional or AP of LEED.

In the recent years, LEED becomes the best standard of constructions along with the six most popular systems. Now LEED has almost 150 AP with roughly 20 committees of 200 or more volunteers. The main purpose of LEED is defined the greenhouse with full design. They want to be the leader in the construction industry with green concept, aware people about the benefits of green house and make this purpose working for the people with great interest.

Green buildings are building to reduce the use of energies comparing with other usually constructed buildings and LEED certify these buildings. These certified buildings become the more healthy and comfortable than other usual buildings and these green buildings are using the less energy with more efficiency than usual buildings. You can find the USGBC list which produces the benefits of a green house of LEED certified will have to be and the benefits can improving air, reducing water waste, engaged, the house owners along with the society.

Constructing a green house with the LEED rating system will make the cost higher for the primary design as well as for construction. If the designer does not understand well the constructing processes this will take more time than estimation. Some of the design and constructing processes are complicated than usual building system and these can make the misunderstanding between the designers, constructors and the owner of that greenhouse and all the processes will delay the whole construction.

There is a lack of instruments of green buildings with the standard of LEED’s requirements and hiring an AP and design consultant will surely increase the whole for the construction. All the above processes have to be fulfilled by the owner to get the LEED certification. Though these costs seem higher now but the overall benefits you will get from your greenhouse will be more than those extra costs. These costs also make your house more comfortable and healthier than the usual builds. The awareness of using green house is increased day by day by the LEED standard and one day every one will use greenhouse with LEED standard.

LEED standard wants to reduce fossil fuel in houses and the USGBC make challenge of 2030 before that year they want to make every house without using fossil fuel which cause the greenhouse gas. LEED wants the efficient using of fossil fuel and they are now looking on the other products. They want to decrease the use of toxic chemicals with the less harmful products like the leather. Though the LEED rating system is just a measurement system not a designing but this make the change to the people to better use of energy.

Using green house concept to decrease the environmental collision of building is a good idea and LEED proposed the rating system to construct a green building. More than 8100 km2 area is using for contracting building every year and 38% of the green house gas are formed from the buildings both commercial and home in US. If we can use green house the total amount of green house gas from buildings will be less than 10% and that will be help to keep the increment of green house gas under control. LEED will show you the process and the system to build your own perfect green house. This will not only decrease the green house gas, it will also decrease the operating cost of your house. Constructing a building with the proper use of LEED rating system is a time costly as well as money costly but the benefits you will get from the green building is 2 or 3 times larger than the main cost. This green building will satisfy you mentally and the environment of your house will be more healthy and comfortable.

Tehira Hasan is a freelance copywriter and can write any topic you want. One improtant thing to consider is the orientation of your home on the property. One way to gain energy savings is to situate the house toward the northwest and use fewer openings and heavier walls on that side.

The house should open up to the southeast in order to take advantage of solar heat. Use louvers to block harsh summer sun angles and also allow weak angled winter warmth. With a southeast orientation, the slope of the main roof should face southwest with solar panels placed on that side.

Another way to save money is in the configuration and construction of the house. Heavy mass should be used on the north or northwest side in a green house floor plan to block the winter cold. It also is an efficient way to run plumbing and HVAC. The roof may be designed to collect rainwater in large barrels or cisterns which will cut down on city water costs.

The interior of a green house floor plan should be open and spacious to allow for natural airflow from open windows and stragically placed panels. This type of design cuts down on the need for air conditioning by making use of wind currents to bring fresh air into the home. Pick out the most energy efficient doors and window you can afford since they will provide an excellent return on you investment in lower energy bills month after month.

The true beauty of a green house floor plan is the ability to live “off the grid” with only a few extra features. This, in summary, is what he said.

The two great issues of the 21st century – poverty and climate change – are interdependent: they succeed or fail together. The economic crisis we are now experiencing is a shorter, shallower problem.

WHO CAUSES THE CLIMATE CHANGE?

There is no doubt that climate change is caused by human activity. People produce greenhouse gases, not all of which are absorbed by the atmosphere. Hence we have a stock of gases in the atmosphere trapping other chemicals: this is what we call ‘the greenhouse effect’. The impact is felt mainly through water – melting glaciers and ice-caps, reduction of ice in the polar regions, tsunamis, rising sea levels.

Early economists misunderstood the impact of climate change because they didn’t recognise the size and uncertainty of the problem, which is global, long-term and very big. The changes that are happening are not marginal like those in economics. Moreover, the problem is growing all the time, so delay worsens it.

Governments and other interested bodies need to consider ‘externalities’ – the effects of one person’s actions on others – and hence the interconnectedness of all aspects of climate change.

WHAT IS THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM?

About two-thirds of emissions of greenhouse gases are accounted for by only six or seven countries. Poor countries will figure large in emissions in the next years because there are more people in them, but rich countries account for more emissions overall, as their emissions per capita are higher. In the mid-19th century the rate of emission was 285ppm CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent); now it is 430ppm and we are adding CO2e at the rate of more than 2.5ppm/year. If we continued as we are now – the ‘business as usual’ (BAU) scenario – we would reach a level of 750ppm by the end of the century, which would be nothing short of ruinous.

The challenge is to keep the rate of emissions under 500ppm, or, better still, 450ppm (which we will reach, under BAU, in six years). This would keep the increase in temperature to less than two degrees and would reduce emissions to about 50% of those of 1990-2000.

The trouble is that, although humans have been on earth for some 100,000 years, we don’t know what the effects of high levels of emissions will be. In the last Ice Age, 10-12,000 years ago, the temperature was only about five degrees lower than it is now.

What we do know is that temperature increase will force people from their existing settlements by rising sea levels or loss of suitable conditions for agriculture or survival by other means. Massive human movements are bound to lead to extended conflicts.

It takes a long time for reduced emissions to lead to reduced concentrations in the atmosphere. By 2050 there will be some 9 billion people on the planet. Overall our aim should be to reduce emissions to 2 tonnes per person and by 2050 to reduce emissions to 50% of their 1990 levels.

WHAT ARE WE TO DO?

There are three key areas to focus on:

energy efficiency developing and deploying low-carbon technologies – an attractive and long-term option whose effects promise to last several decades halting deforestation, which is the source of 15-20% of emissions.

The cost of reducing emissions is estimated at about $2 trillion. Sounds like a huge amount of money? In fact, it’s only about 1-2% of the world economy – and the cost is to put one-off new measures in place, not a long-lasting, continuous commitment.

Prices, taxes and regulation are necessary too, and individual preferences have to be managed. People need to be made to understand the consequences of their actions. Remember the introduction of the breathalyser? Many people were outraged at the alleged infringement of personal liberty, yet now the practice is not only commonplace but fully accepted as right.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE GLOBAL DEAL?

Action has to be taken internationally. Here is what the global ‘deal’ we need would look like:

1. Global emissions targets for rich countries.

2. Developing countries to take on targets too (as some already have, e.g. Brazil, India and China).

3. Emissions trading should be encouraged.

4. There must be a halt to deforestation and investment in agriculture, an initiative driven by developing countries.

5. Employ technology. Some 50% of our energy currently comes from coal. Carbon capture and storage could give us solids to use as fuel.

6. Adaptation: we need to remember that development in a more hostile climate is more expensive.

These principles need to be firmly established before the next Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December, when it is hoped this deal will be drafted.

There are two points to note about any economic crisis. One is that the longer the risks are ignored, the worse the consequences. The second is that action to get out of the present crisis must not sow the seeds of the next one. But the current downturn creates an opportunity: materials, for insulating homes, for example, are cheaper; and now is a good time to invest in energy efficiency, new technologies and low-carbon growth.

“2009 is a year when political leadership, pressure and decision are vital,” says Lord Stern. “The prize from success is great; the risks from failure are immense.”

Written by Harish Kohli and Ingrid. Some say that annihilation of the vast green world has dated back only to the 50’s, but all these were proven to be wrong. The history of deforestation takes us back into the corridors of time when humans primarily occupied the earth.

Fire was used deliberately and was started to be the first cause of bald forests since half a million years ago. Ever since the era of the ancient domain has processed, the ways to barren our lands have evolved and thereby discovered recent man made ideations to deplete our forests of its natural glow. The turn of the twentieth century has further paved way for more advanced knowledge on deforestation techniques that the number of destroyed forests has not stopped counting ever since.

Although it is a sad fact, deforestation has been used as a method of means to earn a living. From small to bigger profits, deforestation has been used by humans in all class types and races. For whichever ways it served them, there is truly no excuse of destroying the forest and harming the nature that brings a heap of better and bigger possibilities for the world. Our forests offer a permanent life source, and it shouldn’t be exchanged for the temporary joys of human gain and profit.

Pre Historical Deforestation

Some 4000 years ago, evidences of man made plant and animal extinction actions have been seen. Fire was one of the popular methods of balding a forest to be turned into an agricultural area. Grazing animals also became a lead to major deforestation in area locales. The aborigines transferred form one location to another whenever the land becomes barren and of no further use to them.

Perhaps the only reason why there were no significant effects at that time is because of the population issue. If the present population has been born in the past, then extreme deforestation actions could have happened. The world could not have tolerated the effects some million years ago if this were the case. Luckily, the population now isn’t the same in number than the people who used to inhabit the earth. If it so happened that the aborigines were wide in number, then the earth now could have been one of the dreadful places to live in.

The Industrial Times Of Deforestation

Since the advent of industrialization began, deforestation processes still continued and even rose to bigger numbers. None at that time was able to see the probable effects that we are experiencing right now. During those times, timber was in great popularity among shipbuilders; thus, the business of logging grew in astounding counts.

Also, woods were used in constructions and pottery; and whenever forests were depleted of these essential businesses, men flew from place to place in search of a new and fresh source of timber. On and on the process continued until visible barren land areas came to view. Since then, it became difficult to put a stop to deforestation, and men only grew with greed for their sole profits.

Present Deforestation Trends

Marginal soils are being used in a slash and burn method for creating short term goals. Over 200 million people are using this technique all over the world; and perhaps it is the main reason why gigantic land areas have been totally exhausted and eroded. Such lands are of no use for any form of cultivation at the present time. Beyond doubt, the demand of growing businesses have endangered the forests ever since.

If people try to go over the history of deforestation then and now, it can virtually be seen that our untouched land areas are slowly disappearing. The means of reversing could still be probable; but it needs great deal of human effort to finally bring a change into our world.

No matter how unreachable goals may seem, there can still be ways to achieve it if followed with utmost sincerity and unconditional love for nature.

Paul Hata is active in various community and social programs.Get the latest Environment,Ecology and Gardening information here – WorldEnvironmentPages.com ,WorldEcologyPages.comand WorldGardenPages.com

Related posts:

Deforestation – Effects on Environment and Society

Root Causes of Deforestation

Harmful Effects of Deforestation

Tips for Buying a Green House Kit

Green house

Buying green house kit

Green house kit

For busy gardeners, buying a Green House Kit offers one compelling advantage: Everything you need to build your greenhouse down to the last nut and bolt and delivered right to your door. Besides shopping convenience, a ready-to-assemble green house kit removes the guesswork, a big plus if you’re a first-time greenhouse owner.

Most kit greenhouses can be assembled by two people in two days or less. You will first have to build a foundation and make utility arrangements: electrical, water, etc..

Sometimes it’s advantageous to buy your kit from a greenhouse supplier who also offers a line of high-quality accessories, such as shelving, lighting and irrigation systems. It’s always tempting to purchase general purpose accessories from a discount store. Sometimes these discount solutions will do the trick. But it’s worth pointing out that greenhouse equipment is specially designed to survive dirt, insects, extreme heat and moisture, and to fit without damaging the greenhouse or voiding its warranty.

POPULAR GREENHOUSE MODELS

When you begin researching before buying a green house kit, you’ll quickly discover that there are many options available. You’ll find both attached and freestanding models, and in a wide variety of sizes and construction styles. You’ll find curved and straight eaves, roof, side and end vents, and various gutter drainage systems. Framing materials include wood, PVC, and various gauges of aluminum and steel frames. Coverings include tempered glass, double-or triple-wall rigid plastic panels, and clear plastic sheeting.

Analyze many models, keeping your goals (and, of course, your budget) in mind.

It’s a good idea to make sure that the green house kit you have your eye on will expand to accommodate your future needs. Many greenhouse owners find that they need to expand their square footage almost immediately. Once you actually begin using the greenhouse, you’ll discover a whole new world of possibilities.

HOW TO EVALUATE GREEN HOUSE KITS

Consider both greenhouse kit cost and ease of assembly. Complex, ornate designs will generally be more expensive and more time-consuming to assemble. But generally, the more expensive the design, the more complete the kit will be.

Simpler, less expensive kits sometimes require additional purchases.

If your kit doesn’t include everything you need to build a green house, determine what else you may need to purchase, and consider the degree of assembly complexity this introduces into the equation. In many high-end kits, all structured components are pre-drilled, all panels are cut to fit. In less expensive kits, you may find yourself cutting panels and drilling holes.

Calculate the true cost of your greenhouse. To the kit price, add shipping, taxes, the cost of the foundation, utility connections, and labor cost, if any. If possible, read the assembly manual online before you purchase to see whether you possess the necessary level of skill required. If it looks like you’ll need help, be sure to budget labor cost.

When the kit arrives, unpack the pieces carefully, and count everything immediately to make sure you received exactly what you were supposed to.Contact your supplier immediately if any pieces are missing. You don’t want missing pieces to hold up your assembly process.

Study the plans thoroughly before beginning assembly. Building a green house kit is similar to working a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece is designed to fit hand in glove. Don’t skip steps! Most greenhouses will last for many years if properly assembled and properly maintained.

For recommendations on where to buy a
green house kit online and for year round bargains for your new or used greenhouse nursery, gardening tools, seeds and bulbs and more, Visit http://www.greenhousegardening.i2gogo.com/recommends/greenhousekits

Related posts:

Building A Green House Plans – Bill Keene Green House Review

<a href='http://www.greeenism.info/article/build-your-own-green-house-green-house-design-made-simple/' rel='bookmark' title='Permanent Link: Build your Own Green House!
